Daniel Corey “The Point At Pemaquid”

Final Week for “Daniel Corey – A Fresh Start” at Camden Falls Gallery

Camden Falls Gallery has been showing Daniel Corey, a traditional painter rooted in the aesthetic values of the Ashcan school and the impressionists of the Cape Cod School of Art. Mostly inspired by light quality, color harmony and abstract shapes, his paintings are created from direct observation. Daniel has been named the 2009 Monhegan Island artist in residence by the Monhegan Artists’ Residency Corporation(MARC).

“Being familiar with the rich art history of the Island and the part some of my personal painting heroes have had in it, would make this residency very special to me. I find this a priceless opportunity to experi
ence the scenes they painted and walk in their footsteps, while having the time to paint my own personal view of the Island and hopefully leaving a few footprints of my own,” says Daniel.

The show ends 7/8 and is followed by “A Day at the Beach” with featured artists, Aline Ordman and John Schmidtberger, who have captured through their unique and individual interpretations, the perfect Maine memories from walking along the shore or having a day at the beach.” FMI, http://camdenfallsgallery.com/

Cafe des Artistes Maine art news for June 27

Hi Everyone,

I have a morning ritual that includes making a double machiato with Lavaza coffee and then reading the Bangor Daily News cover to cover. Things I like to keep tabs on are the economy, tourism in Maine, and the weather.

Economy
Remember how dire the economy looked in December/January? I am so happy to read almost daily reports of indicators pointing up instead of down. And it seems this administration has been a world leader in averting a world-wide financial meltdown. Yikes!

Consumer confidence is almost a prerequisite for good art sales. While badly shaken, US confidence is returning and showing unexpected effects: People are sensibly saving their s
timulus monies instead of spending it all. We all need to encourage confidence in buying art.

We may never return to the glory days of the dot-com run up in the nineties but it is good to know we can still be successful. With hard work, smart marketing and good customer relationships, we can still keep our businesses going forward. Let's keep our fingers crossed for a strong season for all.

Tourism
Memorial Day Weekend, Bar Harbor was jammed with every parking spot taken. Since then, rainy weather has taken a toll on numbers coming to Maine. Scrimshander Chris Cambridge owns The Scrimshaw Workshop, has been in business for 20 years in Bar Harbor and says numbers are down for June, but the big Hotels say bookings are strong for the rest of the season. : ). Chris says a saving grace is the cruise ships. Currently, about one ship a week comes. By September, it will be one a day.

Howard Gallager, owner of Camden Falls Gallery says numbers are down but sales are still good. Let me know how it is going in your neck of the woods and I will try to make reports.

Weather
There is a seven day forecast on the back of the BDN's State section. Today is always a raincloud. The box with the sun shining is always 2-3 days ahead. When we get there, its a raincloud again, and the sun is now 2-3 days ahead. : (

On the negative side, rain keeps some people from coming to Maine. On the positive side, a rainy day is better than a sunny day for sales: Instead of being outside doing all sorts of things, tourists will come into town and go shopping.

People forget just how slow things can be in June and how much rain we can get. In the early seventies I talked my family into buying a building in Bar Harbor to open a sidewalk cafe on Cottage Street. We called it "Il Giardino" - the garden. Our first summer saw maybe six sunny days all season! It was a disaster for weather but it did not stop us, or new clients like photographer George Daniels and sculptor Rudy Condon from being regulars. We had a great run at Il Giardino (even if the locals could never get the name right) for the next ten years as it became a Northern Italian restaurant and fabled night spot.

So the moral of the story? Hang in there baby.

Good luck for a great week & have a happy & safe Fourth of July!

Anthony

Cafe des Artistes Maine art news for June 14

Hello everyone!

Friday night I accompanied Suzanne to an Opening Reception “Perspectives” for Water Street Artists at the Stable Gallery in Damariscotta. After a totally drenching morning, the sun came out & provided perfect weather for a lovely indoor/outdoor reception with a nice crowd, delicious snacks, wine and live music.

If you have not yet visited the Stable Gallery, you may be pleasantly impressed by the attractive interior and the quality of work by gallery artists and featured artists Bob Thomas, Rosalind Welch, Stephen Vowles, Tandem Glass, Kathleen Mack, Suzanne Anderson, Stephen Mott, Jon Fernans and Phylis Loney.

Stable Gallery's next Opening Reception “Fun/Functional” will be held Friday July 10th, 5 -7 pm FMI, www.stablegallerymaine.com/.

Hope Hoffman and Kittlish
at Stable Gallery Opening

We stayed in a lovely B&B in Waldoboro called Le Vatout, owned & run by Dominika and Linda, a fun and charming couple. The yard gardens were extensive
and inviting and breakfast included herbs from the garden. Le Vatout will be hosting art workshops featuring a Pastel Workshop with Pam Cabanas, an Asian Brush Painting Workshop with Jean Kigel, and a Watercolor Workshop with Jan Kilburn, FMI, www.levatout.com/specials.html

I was hoping to visit some client friends in the area the next day, but as we rolled into Damariscotta again, we found the picturesque village under attack by Pirates! We never found out much about the day’s events but the town was packed like sardines with many dressed as pirates, and we watched several re-enactments of the pirate ship’s canon broadsides against Schooner Wharf and skirmishes on Maine Street. We ever heard a pirate joke from our waitress at the Damariscotta River Grill – “Why are pirates so mean? –They just ARRRGH!”

Don’t forget next Sunday 6/21 is both Solstice and Father’s Day.

All my best for a great week,

Anthony

Cafe des Artistes Maine art news for June 6

Hi Everyone,

Last night was First Friday Artwalk in Maine. It has only taken a few years, but the artwalk has caught on big and is now happening in Stonington, Belafst, Boothbay Harbor, Rockland, East Boothbay, Brunswick, Bath and of course, where it began in Portland (I expect to hear of new artwalks not included). Did you know Andy Verzosa of Aucosisco Gallery in Portland started Maine's very first artwalk?

I was at the Belfast Artwalk last night, to distribute
more gallery guides and to see the shows. Aarhus Gallery was celebrating its second birthday and had a large sociable crowd (photo), great eats & wine and an excellent show by galley artists. High Street Studio Gallery was full as well as the Belfast Framer & Gallery. Musicians were playing on different street corners, shops were open & busy, restaurants were bustling. Belfast has never looked more like a fun, arty & happening place.

It's the same for Rockland and Portland, and I am sure on a smaller scale in places like Boothbay Harbor and Stonington. We have been hearing about the importance of "the creative economy" for years. This is not just the talk - this is local art taking the lead in revitalizing many downtown & village settings.

I say we k
eep building the momentum. A rising tide floats all boats.

Best for a great week,

Anthony

Cafe des Artistes Maine art news for May 30, 2009

Hi Everyone,

I can’t believe it’s already almost June. The sun is playing peek-a-boo on the lake here and has been a sorry stranger lately. If I get the café blog & newsletter done in time I'm going to try to get in my first sail in before it starts to rain again.

Web site update

The lengthy data updates on our web site are now complete. Thanks for your patience. The site is getting a total make over and should be up very soon. In the meantime, if you have any calendar items you would like me to list on Café, please email me at mainegallyguide@gmail.com.

Social Media Marketing

Last Friday in Portland, I attended a half-day workshop on Social Media Marketing presented by the Maine Marketing Association. They say using Social Media today is as important as having a web site was 10 years ago. The speakers were Maine’s top experts and gave me a much clearer understanding of how it all works together. Stay tuned in future newsletter for tips, links, and conversations on how to improve gallery and studio traffic using Social Media.

Don’t forget to hear Café des Artistes on WERU 89.9 FM, Saturday mornings at 8:30.

OK I did sneak in a sail. It was beautiful & then got dark & moody. There were young people on a dock
making giant soap bubbles that would tumble along slowly, just above the water’s surface. I am so happy summer is here.

Best,

Anthony

Hi Everyone!

The new Gallery Guide is here, looks awesome, and is being distributed as you are reading this. You should be getting yours from Stan soon.

More good news: our web site is getting an exciting makeover and soon will be up for all to see and use. In the meantime, we ask to please not call asking why the updates are not up - give us just two more weeks.

Finally, last week I sent out a survey (my very first) in the Cafe newsletter. If you filled it out and got an "Oooops!" message, I am so sorry. Soon after it was sent, the survey application went down for much of the day. So if you got that message and would not mind taking it again (it is short) here is the link:
https://app.icontact.com/icp/sub/survey/start?sid=4449&cid=295899
Reading the responses was enlightening and made me feel more in touch with the Maine collective artistic mindset. I will be sending it out again in the next newsletter and publishing some results soon.

Almost forgot! Victor Hathaway and I will be starting up the Cafe des Artistes radio show this coming Memorial Day Weekend on "Saturday Moring Coffee House" at 8:30 on WERU 89.9-FM and streaming live on weru.org. You will always be able to hear a podcast of the show here on the Cafe blog. Let me know of events you would like publicized.

So, enjoy our lovely wet Spring, hope you like the guides when they arrive and hope you love the new web site.

all my best,

Anthony

Historical Native American Artwork Highlighted in Maine's Capital

Artwork created to raise awareness of ancient Passamaquoddy rock carvings, possibly dating back as far as 10,000 years, is now on display throughout Maine's Capitol complex. The Equinox Project, that features works from 22 women artists, native and non-native, and over 30 Passamaquoddy children from Pleasant Point and Indian Township schools, is touring the state to increase awareness of Passamaquoddy culture.

In October of 2006, one of the most sacred and well-documented sites of ancient petroglyphs on the eastern seaboard of the United States was returned to its original peoples, the Passamaquoddy Tribe. The site is known as "Picture Rocks" and lies on the Machias Bay in Downeast Maine. The rock carvings and peckings date as far back as 3,000 to 5,000 years and its most ancient peckings may be as old as 10,000 years. University of Maine Museum of Art Director George Kinghorn
serves as juror for "New American Paintings"

George Kinghorn, Director of the University of Maine Museum of Art, was invited to serve as juror of the 81st edition of the national publication "New American Paintings" that will be released at major booksellers such as Borders and Barnes and Noble later this week. "New American Paintings" is a juried art exhibition in print that surveys the finest contemporary painters working in a wide range of styles from abstract to representational. Kinghorn reviewed over 800 artist submissionsand selected the 40 painters to be featured in the publication. „This was a most rewarding project which allowed me to view an enormous amount of exceptional art. It was a daunting task to select only 40 artists for the publication” said Kinghorn. Kinghorn is the first Director and Curator from a Maine museum to be invited to serve as juror of the publication.
